Common Trouble/Difficulty/Problems Related to Advanced Electric Vehicle

Time for charging -

No matter how much we love electrical cars, we often don’t realize that it takes a lot of time to charge them. So, if you have to go somewhere in an emergency and you forgot to charge your car, you will be in for a difficult time. However, if you are willing to spend more money on companies such as Tesla and Porsche, they have fast charging abilities that can recharge the car in less than half the time. Obviously, even a supercharging speed cannot compare with filling the car with petrol or gas.

Repairing -

The repairing costs for electric vehicles are still quite high. This is because mechanics still need to learn new technology. So, it is essential that people are trained before electric vehicles become part of the mainstream. Therefore, the market is still not ready for a complete transition to electric vehicles.

Weather conditions -

In winters, electric vehicles may lose electric power. So, your car might not operate in such conditions. This will make them less reliable. You could even get stuck in the middle of nowhere.Furthermore, the driving range also decreases during harsher weather conditions. This discourages those who live in certain climates from owning an EV.

Pollution -

Even if electric vehicles don’t leave any harmful emissions, they need a lot of electricity. When such huge amounts of electricity need to be produced, global pollution will increase. So, electric vehicles leave their footprint indirectly. Also, when the batteries are disposed of, they will accumulate and lead to huge amounts of non-biodegradable waste.

Lack of charging stations -

If you are going somewhere, you might need charging stations on the way. You might not be able to find any charging ‘pumps’ in less populated areas. So, if you find yourself stuck in such an area, you will be in for a difficult time unless there are plenty of stations available.

Speed -

Most of the companies that produce electric vehicles don’t offer a high speed. For instance, the highest speed of e-Golf or Kia Soul is not higher than 100 miles per hour. With such a high price tag for these cars, this is not a good package as far as performance goes.

Design choice is limited -

Today, cars are being produced with classy styles that we all fall in love with. However, most of the electric vehicle companies don’t have those attractive designs. For example, Golf E still has the same design as it first did. So, if you want a classy car, you will not have much of a choice.

Long road trips -

No matter how attractive modern electric cars are, they have a huge downside. Obviously, longer charging times along with small distance capacity make it hard to plan long trips. So, you will have to consider the traffic as well as the availability of charging stations on your way.

Expensive in long run -

Electricity is getting expensive day by day. The costs of producing it are increasing. So, you will have to consider the long-term charges as well. When the cost of your electric vehicle adds up with the charges of electricity, it might get quite expensive in the long run. However, if renewable sources of electricity are used, this will help to reduce the overall cost in favor of electric vehicles.

Selling -

Electric cars are still evolving as new technologies are being introduced. So, everyone is in the race of changing their model after a few years. If they want to sell the previous model, they might not get many buyers as there is a new variety in the market.

You might need another car -

Now that you understand many of the downsides of electric vehicles, you might need to have another car that has traditional sources of energy. Not many people can afford to have two cars at home. So, this will create an inseparable gap between the rich and poor. Therefore, in practical terms, electric vehicles may not be the best for today’s world.

Trackers -

In all the electric cars, a tracker records your entire driving history as well as your driving habits. Obviously, no one wants such an invasion of privacy. They keep track of the information for your safety, but it is still not a good tradeoff for many people. So, this is a major downside of modern electric vehicles.

Third world countries -

Many developing countries still use non-renewable sources for producing electricity. So, it is not as easy to implement the system of electric vehicles in such countries. As electric vehicles take over in first world countries, this could potentially create a further gap between them and poorer countries who have yet to adopt EVs.

Change the direction of world -

If electric vehicles take over, they will change the direction of the world. Oil companies are at the top of the economy because of their high demands due to vehicles. So, they will lose that position if electric vehicles take the stage, which could ultimately alter oil demand and have major economic impact.

Short range anxiety -

First of all, let’s talk about short-range anxiety. As the term suggests, electric vehicles have a major downside as the driver will always be conscious about the distance the car will travel before the battery runs out. Most of the modern electric vehicles have a limited capacity battery and thus offer limited mileage. For example, even the most affordable electrical cars don’t go over 130 miles on a single charge. So, unless you are willing to pay double the price, this will always be a disadvantage of these cars.

Introduction to the Design Process

Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)  Definition of Design - • Engineering design is the process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.  • It is a decision-making process (often iterative), in which the engineering sciences and mathematics are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective.  • Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation.  • Mechanical design means the design of components and systems of a mechanical nature—machines, products, structures, devices and instruments.  • For the most part mechanical design uses mathematics, materials, and the engineering-mechanics sciences.  • Additionally, it uses engineering graphics and the ability to communicate verbally to clearly express your ideas. • Mechanical engineering design includes all mechanical...

Main use of Ultra Capacitor in EVs

ULTRA-CAPACITOR  Ultra capacitor plays very essential role in the whole system, so that the new technologies have the such abilities to control them. In the ultra capacitor system, the important contents are the DC-DC converter base on the insulated gate bipolar transistor [IGBT], smoothing aluminum inductor Ls, ultra capacitor and battery pack. During acceleration, the capacitor voltage of ultra capacitor permitted to set free from packed rate charge to one-third of its nominal voltage. During deceleration, the energy of capacitor which is released during acceleration period is improved back and charge up the ultra capacitor. Ultra- capacitor is mainly used because it store up 20 times more energy as evaluate to electrolytic capacitor as shown in figure 6. Ultra capacitor also improves the transient performance in EVs, also increase lifespan of batteries. Ultra capacitor provides additional supply to the electric vehicles and also extends the distance.
